Welcome to another Spotlight Cache Showcase! In this article series, we review the contents of Marvel SNAP’s upcoming Spotlight Caches and decide if this is the week you should cash in those hard-earned keys.
This week we’ve got brand new Series 5 card Copycat appearing in the box, alongside Series 5’s Cull Obsidian and the mad titan himself, Thanos.

Copycat – New flexible 3-drop?

Copycat joins Marvel SNAP as part of the Maximum Effort season. It costs 3 energy, has 5 power. It has the effect: "When you draw this, steal the text from the bottom card of your opponent's deck.” Like Nocturne, its ability is fairly unique and broad in scope that it should be able to find a home (or at least warrant testing) in several archetypes like Cerebro 5 and Surfer.

Cull Obsidian – Strong but inconsequential?

Cull Obsidian is currently in the Tier C of our Card Tier List, having a negative cube rate and a barely above 50% winrate while only being played in 1.4% of decks in ranks 70+. Cull Obsidian is most commonly played in Zoo and Thanos decks where it synergizes well with cards like Squirrel Girl and the various infinity stones from Thanos.

Thanos – Fallen Titan

The last card in this week’s Spotlight Cache is Thanos, which is currently sitting in Tier D (!!) with a negative cube rate and winrate, and only a 2.0% popularity in ranks 70+. A mighty fall from its once dominating position in the meta. Thanos is such a unique card that it is its own archetype, playing cards that synergizes with its infinite stones like the aforementioned Cull Obsidian, Mockingbird, and Hope Summers.

Spotlight Variants

Each week, you have the chance to open exclusive Spotlight Cache Variants for all the cards featured within. These variants can only appear once you own all three cards featured, so you’ll need plenty of Spotlight Keys if you want one from scratch! Spotlight Cache exclusive variants will not be available in-game again until one full year has passed following their release.

The featured artist for the Maximum Effort Season is PANDART Studio, so we should expect all Spotlight Variants for new cards, such as Copycat, to follow the same theme during this month. Cull Obsidian receives a portrayal by Seth Adams, and Thanos gets a new variant from Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho.. If any of these tickle your fancy, be sure not to miss out!

Final Thoughts

This week’s Spotlight Caches boils down to how much you like playing Thanos decks, really. Copycat may become a mainstay in certain archetypes, but both Cull Obsidian and Thanos share a lot of the same decks and are both unfortunately struggling in this meta.
The other factor to consider are the upcoming Spotlight Caches. Marvel Boy is coming in a couple of weeks alongside Red Hulk and Blob, both of which are commonly seen in Thanos decks.

But what do you think? Are you using Spotlight Keys to get Copycat or saving it for future weeks? Let us know your thoughts over at @UntappedSNAP on Twitter/X. Alternatively, come and chat with the wider Marvel SNAP Community in our Discord Server!
