New Release By The Numbers: Is Anti-Venom Worth Spotlight Keys?

The final card of the We Are Venom Season promises a cure for the meta, but is Anti-Venom worth picking up?
Dubbed “Iron Lad on steroids,” Anti-Venom is bringing a new layer of deck building to Marvel SNAP, but its restrictions may not be for the faint of heart. Where Iron Lad simply gives you a duplicate of a card in your deck, Anti-Venom requires either strict planning or including Luke Cage to keep the discounted Energy while maintaining the card's original Power. Looking through this lens, Anti-Venom is a perfect fit for archetypes with top-heavy curves, like the Hela Archetype or Tribunal Archetype, or archetypes that already naturally include Luke Cage, like Affliction Archetype or Surfer Archetype. Unfortunately, even with these restrictions in mind, Anti-Venom is underperforming. The By the Numbers Article Series dives into the metrics behind the latest card release to help you decide if the new Series 5 card available in this week’s Spotlight Cache is worth your precious resources. Find out our verdict on Anti-Venom below.

We’ll be ranking Anti-Venom based on the following set of parameters:
  • We’ll be looking at Anti-Venom's performance at the Rank 70 and above
  • We’ll be considering Anti-Venom's overall win percentage in these ranks, but also its average cubes and popularity
  • Finally, we'll look at which archetypes Anti-Venom best fits into and how the card performs in the current meta
Our Card Tier List are based on the Average Cubes and Popularity of a card when compared to all other cards in Marvel SNAP.

The Raw Data

Anti-Venom has a 0.00 average cube rate at Rank 70 and above, placing it at Tier C on the Card Tier List. The card has a 47.8% winrate, falling short of other cards in the meta. The Pixie Archetype, Anti-Venom's most successful deck, is also maintaining a spot at Tier C on the Meta Tier List, with comparable stats to Phoenix Archetype and Mill Archetype at Rank 70 and above. Its 2.4% popularity means there's very few players experimenting with the new card and players are falling back on tried and true decks for the last leg of the season.
We'll be watching to see if Anti-Venom's performance improves as the limited player experimentation begins to slow down in the coming weeks and its popularity drops even further. For now, the card's metrics match the winrates and average cube rates of cards playing in a similar space, like Iron Lad and Doctor Doom.
Remember that these stats will settle over time and this early review consists of 24 hours of data. Be sure to revisit the card stats on our Card Tier List to see where Anti-Venom lands in terms of power level and popularity.

Anti-Venom’s Best Decks

With thousands of games already logged by the Untapped Companion at Rank 70 and above since Anti-Venom release, we have good picture of which decks are working for the latest Series 5 card and which are not. Here are the best-performing options:
The top performer is a variation on the Pixie Archetype. The deck naturally includes Luke Cage and Mobius M. Mobius, cards that help counterbalance Anti-Venom's negatives. Deck composition is made up of a medley of high- and low-cost cards with high Power, like Alioth and Magneto. Man-Thing naturally plays well with Luke, while the deck's other important cards are out of Lady Deathstrike's range. Anti-Venom slots in nicely, and provides another way to play a powerful 0-Cost card or counter a bad Pixie swap. With a +0.45 average cube rate and high 56.0% winrate at Rank 70 and above, the deck is performing well. Don’t worry if you are missing any of the cards listed, you can always find a deck tailored to your collection on our Marvel SNAP Decks page.
The other high performer is another archetype that naturally includes Luke Cage: the Affliction Archetype. Anti-Venom has made its way into the deck for free card thanks to Luke, while Ajax can still pump out high Power even with only afflicting one Sid eof the board. The Quicksilver and Wiccan package adds an alternate line to the deck to keep Power hitting the board, as a Turn 5 Alioth is a surprise most opponent's can't handle.

Final Thoughts

Is Anti-Venom worth your resources? Early Review analysis revolves around two dimensions, the card's immediate power level and how strong its archetype is in the current Marvel SNAP meta within its release window.
The raw data shows Anti-Venom is putting out weak metrics with low popularity. As popularity lowers even further in the coming weeks, these metrics may increase as the card is played less for experimentation and by a higher skilled class of player. Outside of Pixie, Affliction and Tribunal are also seeing success with Anti-Venom. On an archetype level, the Pixie Archetype is sitting at Tier C since the card's release.
