You cannot stop it - Asgard's doom is erupting into Marvel SNAP, but is this a sign or Ragnarok or will Surtur fizzle out?
Early stats are in and Surtur is shaping up to be yet another powerful Season Pass card. The By the Numbers Article Series dives into the numbers behind the latest card release to help you decide if the new Season Pass card is worth picking up. Check out the decklists and data behind the War of the Nine Realms Season Pass card below to see just how impactful the new card has been on the current meta.
We’ll be ranking Surtur based on the following set of parameters:
- We’ll be looking at Surtur's performance at the Rank 70 and above
- We’ll be considering Surtur's overall win percentage in these ranks, but also its average cubes and popularity
- Finally, we'll look at which archetypes Surtur best fits into and how the card performs in the current meta
Our Card Tier List are based on the Average Cubes and Popularity of a card when compared to all other cards in Marvel SNAP.
The Raw Data
Surtur is currently occupying the top spot on the Card Tier List with a +0.97 average cube rate and 64.0% winrate at Rank 70 and above. The card's high winrate, demonstrates that despite being the most used card in the game at Rank 70 and above with a whopping 31.2% play rate, it's still putting out great numbers. For now, we'll be watching to see if these numbers increase as player experimentation wanes and its popularity begins to drop. Projections show Surtur's stats should rise even further, eventually settling around winrates and average cube rates of cards playing in a similar space, such as Bishop and Hit-Monkey.
Remember that these stats will settle over time and this early review consists of 24 hours of data. Be sure to revisit the card stats on our Card Tier List to see where Surtur lands in terms of power level and popularity.
Surtur’s Best Decks
With thousands of games already logged by the Untapped Companion at Rank 70 and above since Surtur's release, we have a idea of which decks are working for the latest Season Pass card and which are not. Here are the best-performing options:
The standout amongst these archetypes is reminiscent of am archetype that saw brief popularity a meta or two ago: the Point Slam Archetype. Known as “Fours” or “Big Guys,” Point Slam uses Zabu to cheat out the 4-Cost, 10-Power cast of characters, including Attuma, Crossbones and Cull Obsidian. If played correctly, you should have a free Skaar to play alongside another 10-Power card on Turn 6. Now, with its new toy, Surtur gains Power each time one of these cards is played, and it can amass a hefty amount of Power when played on curve. The most best-performing version boasts an incredible +1.55 average cube rate and 71.2% winrate at Rank 70 and above, much higher than the archetype average. The deck plays cards like Armor, Cosmo and Juggernaut to protect its vulnerable 10-Power cards from Shang-Chi and Shadow King. Don’t worry if you are missing any of the cards listed, you can always find a deck tailored to your collection on our Marvel SNAP Decks page.
The other top performer is an unorthodox take on Point Slam, utilizing Moon Girl to generate copies of Hit-Monkey and She-Hulk as the main Power of the deck, keeping Surtur below Shang range and throwing priority. The deck plays more like the Bounce Archetype, with an early game supported by Black Swan to create big Monkeys and free She-Hulks.
We also need to not only analyze Surtur's individual power level, but also the archetypes utilizing the card best. If we look at the current Marvel SNAP meta, the Point Slam Archetype, is sitting in Tier B with a 64.8% winrate and +1.00 average cube rate using data since the card's release on November 5, 2024 at Rank 70 and above. The most popular deck, however, clocks a bit higher, as detailed above.
POINT SLAM ARCHETYPE
Final Thoughts
How good is Surtur? Early Review analysis revolves around two dimensions, the card's immediate power level and how strong its archetype is in the current Marvel SNAP meta within its release window.
Raw data shows Surtur is putting out great metrics while being the most used card at Rank 70 and above - a tough balance to hold. As popularity and player experimentation begins to drop, these numbers should only get better, as experienced players move the card metrics higher. On an archetype level, the Point Slam Archetype is sitting in Tier B since the card's release.
