Welcome to another Spotlight Cache Showcase! In this article series, we review the contents of Marvel SNAP’s upcoming Spotlight Caches and decide if this is the week you should cash in those hard-earned keys.
This week we’ve got brand new Series 5 card Phastos appearing in the box, alongside Series 5’s Corvus Glaive and Series 4’s Spider-Ham.

Phastos New Silver Surfer Staple?

Phastos joins Marvel SNAP as part of the Celestials’ Finest season. He costs 3 energy, has 3 power, and has the effect: "On Reveal: Give each card in your deck -1 Cost or +2 Power." Its ability resembles other cards you are probably familiar with such as Okoye, America Chavez, and maybe even Forge in terms of adding Power and Sera for Cost reduction.
Phastos is expected to fit quite nicely into decks with Silver Surfer, since both of its effects have great synergy with other cards commonly played in that archetype. On on hand, Phastos’ +2 Power ability could work wonders with the likes of Brood, Sebastian Shaw, and Gladiator, while its -1 Cost could allow for more 3-cost cards to be played throughout the game and to facilitate combos with cards like Wong and Absorbing Man.

Corvus Glaive – A Discard Darling

Corvus Glaive is currently in the B tier of our Card Tier List, having a +0.22 cube rate and a 52.9% winrate while being played in 3.7% of decks ranks 70-99. Corvus Glaive is most commonly played in Hela and Discard shells where it synergizes well with cards like Hela (duh), Morbius, and Apocalypse.
If discard cards is your jam, Corvus Glaive would probably be a great addition to your collection.

Spider-Ham – Not So Fresh

The last card in this week’s Spotlight Cache is Spider-Ham, which is currently sitting in C tier with a +0.14 cube rate, a 53.0% winrate, and a 5.9% popularity in ranks ranks 70-99. Spider-Ham can be commonly found in decks that aim to disrupt your opponent like as Baron Zemo and Junk alongside cards like Yondu, Annihilus, Cable, and others.

Spotlight Variants

Each week, you have the chance to open exclusive Spotlight Cache Variants for all the cards featured within. These variants can only appear once you own all three cards featured, so you’ll need plenty of Spotlight Keys if you want one from scratch! Spotlight Cache exclusive variants will not be available in-game again until one full year has passed following their release.

Francesco Tomaselli is this month’s featured artist, and so it’s their Phastos variant you’ll find inside the Spotlight Cache. Corvus Glaive receives a new variant by Seth Adams and Spider-Ham gets variant by Wendell Dalit. If any of these tickle your fancy, be sure not to miss out!

Final Thoughts

This week’s Spotlight Caches boils down to how much you like playing Surfer and Discard decks. Corvus is already a mainstay in Discard and Phastos seems to be a great addition to Surfer, which remains a very competitive archetype. Spider-Ham doesn’t really seem to fit in many competitive archetypes at the moment, but that can change in the future depending on the meta and balance changes.
The other factor to consider are the upcoming Spotlight Caches. Next week we’ll see Arishem being added to the game in the same cache as Black Swan and Hercules, with Hydra Bomb the following week.
