New Release By The Numbers: Is Toxin Worth Spotlight Keys?

The newest card release is making Bounce seem quite intoxicating. Toxin is the latest symbiote to join the We Are Venom Season, but should you pick it up?
Toxin is the first card with a pure Bounce ability to be added to the game since its launch, joining Beast and Falcon to create the new Holy Trinity of the Bounce Archetype. While Toxin's natural home may be traditional Bounce, its low cost and focus on Power, rather than Beast's Energy discount, allows it to slot into some other archetypes as well. Toxin has seen similar if not more success in the Move Archetype and works well in a variation of the Darkhawk Archetype utilizing Grandmaster for double buffs. The main problem now is a major counter, counter, is seeing a play rate at an all time high. The By the Numbers Article Series dives into the metrics behind the latest card release to help you decide if the new Series 5 card available in this week’s Spotlight Cache is worth your precious resources. Find out our verdict on Toxin below.

We’ll be ranking Toxin based on the following set of parameters:
  • We’ll be looking at Toxin's performance at the Rank 70 and above
  • We’ll be considering Toxin's overall win percentage in these ranks, but also its average cubes and popularity
  • Finally, we'll look at which archetypes Toxin best fits into and how the card performs in the current meta
Our Card Tier List are based on the Average Cubes and Popularity of a card when compared to all other cards in Marvel SNAP.

The Raw Data

Toxin has a +0.12 average cube rate at Rank 70 and above, placing it at Tier B on the Card Tier Rankings. The card has a 52.8% winrate, nothing too groundbreaking when compared to the meta tyrants. The Bounce Archetype, however, is maintaining great success in Tier A, second only to the Sera Archetype at Rank 70 and above, and the card is pushing its winrate higher than the archetype average. Its 1.3% popularity means there's very few players experimenting with the new card - Bounce is typically one of the least approachable archetypes and many players may have passed on this card because of the archetype alone.
We'll be watching to see if Toxin's performance improves as the limited player experimentation begins to slow down in the coming weeks and its popularity drops even further. For now, the card's metrics match the winrates and average cube rates of cards playing in a similar space, like Nico Minoru and Silver Sable.
Remember that these stats will settle over time and this early review consists of 24 hours of data. Be sure to revisit the card stats on our Card Tier List to see where Toxin lands in terms of power level and popularity.

Best Toxin Decks

With thousands of games already logged by the Untapped Companion at Rank 70 and above since Toxin's release, we have good picture of which decks are working for the latest Series 5 card and which are not. Here are the best-performing options:
The top performer is a variation of a familiar meta frequenter with a high winrate: the Move Archetype. Cosmo is the ultimate tech in the current meta, and Move has flourished by combining it with Madame Web. The combo allows you to play your On Reveals with the threat of Cosmo on the board, moving to an opponent's key location at a moment's notice. Move is another deck that benefits from bouncing cards back for another proc of abilities - this version even replaces both Falcon and Beast, using Toxin as the sole enabler. With a +0.45 average cube rate and high 59.6% winrate at Rank 70 and above, the deck is performing well, but Toxin seems to have slotted into a successful shell here, rather than increasing the metrics on its own. The deck often plays cards like Araña, Ghost-Spider and Iron Fist for maximum Human Torch and Dagger power. Don’t worry if you are missing any of the cards listed, you can always find a deck tailored to your collection on our Marvel SNAP Decks page.
The other high performer comes as no surprise: Bounce. Agent Venom has made its way into most meta decks now, as detailed in our Meta Tyrant: Is Agent Venom too Strong? article, and the Bounce shell has also added it to its toolkit. The low curve and and flexibility added by Black Swan's and Beast's Energy discounts allow for explosive Turn 6 power slams, but the benefit of throwing priority on Turn 5 is sometimes the deck's downfall, as Cosmo and Alioth are ready to shut down these types of lines.

Final Thoughts

Is Toxin worth your resources? Early Review analysis revolves around two dimensions, the card's immediate power level and how strong its archetype is in the current Marvel SNAP meta within its release window.
The raw data shows Toxin is putting out strong metrics with low popularity. As popularity lowers even further in the coming weeks, these metrics should increase even more as the card is played less for experimentation and by a higher skilled class of player. Outside of Bounce, Move and Sera are also seeing success with Toxin, demonstrating the card isn't the one-trick everyone expected it to be. On an archetype level, the Bounce Archetype is sitting at Tier A since the card's release.
